SKIN MYTHS BUSTED

SKIN MYTHS BUSTED

WHEN IT COMES TO CARBON FOOTPRINTS, NOBODY IS PERFECT. WE ALL CONTRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE IN VARIOUS WAYS, BUT AS CONSCIOUS CONSUMERS, WE CAN MAKE BETTER CHOICES THAT CAUSE LESS OF AN IMPACT ON OUR WONDERFUL WORLD.

Myth: Look for collagen in anti-wrinkle products

Collagen in skincare products can serve as a good water-binding agent, but that is all it does; it simply cannot bond or fuse with your skin's natural supply of this element. This is because the collagen molecule is too large to penetrate into the skin and even when it is made small enough to be absorbed, it cannot bind with the collagen that already exists in your skin. Therefore, collagen is merely a very good moisturising ingredient.

Myth: Look for collagen in anti-wrinkle products

There is no evidence, research or documentation validating the claim that the eye area needs different ingredients from those you use on your face or neck area. A well-formulated serum or moisturiser with antioxidants, emollients and skin-repairing ingredients will work wonders when used around the eye area. You may prefer using a specially labelled eye cream, but you may also do just as well by applying your regular facial moisturiser and/or serum around your eyes.

Myth: There's a product out there that eliminates wrinkles
Unfortunately, there is no combination of products or magic potion in any price range that can prevent or make wrinkles disappear. Daily use of sunscreen (and never getting a tan) are the two best things you can do to slow down the aging process. Wrinkles are the result of cumulative sun damage and the inevitable breakdown of the skin's natural support structure. Skincare ingredients, no matter how magical or holy they can sound, simply cannot replace what plastic surgeons and cosmetic dermatologists do.

Myth: Expensive skincare is better than inexpensive

The truth is that there are good and bad products in all price categories. It's all about the formulation, not the price.

Myth: Natural ingredients are better for the skin than synthetic ingredients

We are becoming increasingly mindful about choosing skincare products made of natural ingredients and there is a general perception that natural skincare is in some way better than synthetic skincare. There are benefits to both methods of formulation and ultimately the decision lies with you and what you feel comfortable with. Getting the facts straight around natural vs synthetic will allow you to make the best decision for you and your skin.

For example, the misconception that synthetic products are stronger and therefore unsuitable for sensitive skin is not true. The reality is that there are synthetic and naturally derived ingredients that can be irritating to the skin, it all depends on your skin. Just because an ingredient is natural, it does not necessarily mean that it is better and just because it is made in a lab does not make it toxic.

SOMEHOW THE WORD “CHEMICAL” HAS BECOME SYNONYMOUS WITH SYNTHETIC TOXIN.

Active ingredients in skincare are what work to address the skin problem that the product is meant to target. Simply put, the term “active ingredient” refers to a chemical that actively targets a specific skin concern such as acne, pigmentation or fine lines and creates a physical change in the skin. Using products that contain active ingredients can be the difference between achieving your skin goals and falling short.
